Yet, placing George and Lennie in modern times is hearsay and their relationship ended in tragedy with Steinbeck placing George in a precarious situation which he would have to dwell upon for the rest of his life. But it also illuminates with its moving tenderness, allegorical scope and unflinching naturalism. It’s a difficult task.
