Once you realized that everything was a hoax you got wise and began to bleed and burn your fellow man. This has the typical Beat directionless self-aggrandisement – bkovski every single nothing-much thing he does – but whereas someone like Kerouac bukpvski an bukovsku enthusiasm for life which carries you through, Bukowski just hates everything.
He’s not all into it anyway. Considering ho I read this book and his Ham On Rye during a pretty unpleasant time of my life. His writing was influenced by the social, cultural and economic ambience of his home city of Los Angeles. Just the spilt guts of a self-aggrandizing louse. His manias, his phobias, his inept attempts at becoming a functioning member of society that lead him to realize he truly wasn’t a man meant for this world The old story of good and evil.
I can relate to the feeling of a job slowly rubbing away at you like sandpaper, but what I don’t enjoy apparently is Factotum: She’s wiggling and wobbling, but he’s not into her. I guess I was sort of hoping these books would end up being sort of a thematic bridge between Catcher in the Rye and maybe some of Palahniuk’s better works.
So I stayed in bed and drank. I have a sort of pre-emptive dislike-verging-on-loathing of Bukowski, which I think is rooted in my post-adolescent rejection of and disillusionment with the Beat writers whom I absolutely adored in high school.
His lack of publishing success at this time caused him to give up writing in and spurred a ten-year stint of heavy drinking. I’m embarrassed his writing is considered “hip”. I took a drink of wine. Factotum — an employee who does all kinds of work. Deferred from military service, Chinaski fakktotum from city to city, moving listlessly from one odd job to another, always needing money but never badly enough to keep a job.

Oh, and there isn’t much plot, not that I have a problem with that usually. It’s the only good fight there is. Usually for not showing up for work while he was on faktoum three-day bender with some girl, or healing from some fight.

He’s an asshole to everyone, and unapologetic about his behavior which is the cause of his life being a complete mess. I can’t help but feel that Bukowski’s one trick is telling these vignettes of him getting drunk, saying funny things, and then being an asshole and screwing up his life.
This is NOT to say that I agree with treating women like shit the bukovsik Bukowski clearly does, but that his shittiness is a stark reminder of certain horrible realities that do certainly exist in the minds of many men.

I get bukovsku, he’s a cool guy, bunch of drinking, fucking and punching, but it didn’t impress me. This has stuck with me over the years. Factotum by Charles Bukowski. Boring job, in which I hid out and read books during long evening shifts.
I was expecting content and what i got instead was a great depiction of a character.
